Interview: “Ram Kapoor is a Man-Child!” – Prabal Panjabi.

Cutie alert! We watched Mere Dad Ki Maruti yesterday and loved Prabal Panjabi in it, so MissMalini decided to set up a quick interview for us. Prabal popped into office and settled down on our sofa to talk about all things Mere Dad Ki Maruti, like his experience working with Ram Kapoor, his off-screen friendship with Saqib Saleem, and that day he missed his call-time because he overslept! He was sweet and adorable, and by the time he left, we were all singing “I knew you were Prabal when you walked in!” to the tune of Taylor Swift‘s I Knew You Were Trouble. *lol* And while he won’t elaborate on his Goa stories just yet, we’re hoping to get it out of him some day :)

Team MissMalini (Team MM): Tell us a little about your character in Mere Dad Ki Maruti.

Prabal Panjabi (PP): I play this character called Gattu, he’s like this bundle of energy who’s always scared, always negative… a little pessimistic b*tch, to be honest. The entire film is a situational comedy, and something goes wrong, and this character basically tells his friend Sameer that everything’s going to go wrong from here… and it does. So my character is, basically yes, a negative little b*tch.

Team MM: What was it like working with Ram Kapoor?

PP: It was too much fun. I had seen Udaan and I had really liked his work, and of course he’s really famous for his TV show, Bade Acche Lagte Hain. When my dad got to know that I’m doing a film with him he was really excited, because I think Ram Kapoor really represents this whole uncle-aunty sort of community and they really love him. When I met him on day one, I realized that he’s a manchild. He’s like a ten-year-old in a forty-year-old’s body, and he’s too much fun.

Team MM: Can you tell us anything funny that happened while shooting?

PP: I had a really bad habit… when we were shooting in Chandigarh, we had separate call times, all of us. We were shooting nights and days alternatively, and I had to reach sets by 7pm. I remember waking up at 8 with the assistant director knocking on the door, and my face… my hair… my eyes… [laughs]. I thought I was going to get thrashed on sets that day, but our director, she’s fantastic. I really love her, Ashima Chibber. The entire film, whatever the film is, everyone’s performances, everything, it’s because of the director. She’s insane.

Team MM: You and Saqib Saleem share great on-screen chemistry. Does this stem from an off-screen friendship?

PP: Saqib and I actually did our first ad together, our first film together… this is our second film together, so I don’t know, there’s some sort of connection. The first ad that we did together was the DoCoMo train ad, that was the first time I met him, around three years ago, and since then we’ve just been really good friends. Irrespective of whether we had done this film or not, we would have still been as great friends. Actually, in real life we’re much more crazy and wild than the film, because it’s a family film.

Team MM: Can you share some of those off-screen moments?

PP: [laughs] In the last two years, he’s the one person I’ve chilled with the most. Like, the most. Before New Years we all went to Goa together, and it was wild… I don’t know how much I can elaborate on that, but it was fun.
Team MM: What’s your favourite dialogue from the film?

PP: My favourite dialogue is actually a Ram Kapoor one. He says, “Isko dekh kar pata chalta hai ki kuch jaanwar apne bachche ko kyun kha jaate hai.” I think that’s crazy.

Team MM: Did you always know you wanted to get into acting?

PP: When I was 13, I did my first school play and I was like, this is awesome. This is bloody brilliant. I did theatre in school. I came to Bombay because I was sick of Delhi and said I wanted to do my college in Bombay. I continued doing theatre, I did a couple of ads, I did a TV show for kids… and then I said, if it happens, it’s great. Even if doesn’t happen for me as a career, I’ll do something to do with films because I just love films.

Team MM: What’s next from you?

PP: I actually did this indie film called Shahid, which is doing the festival rounds. It’s got Raj Kumar Yadav, and Hansal Mehta has directed it. That is completely different from these two films that I did. I play a 22-year-old version of a terrorist who’s in a jail, so my beard is long, I’ve got specs and I’m in convict clothes. So that’s fun… it’s a small role, but it’s different, it’s fun.

Sequel to MERE DAD KI MARUTI on offer

In this era of sequels, the market is abuzz with the rumors that a sequel of MERE DAD KI MARUTI is on offer which would be christened as MERE DAD KI MARUTI 2 and when that happens, if is not the premise, it indeed could be perhaps first such experimentation in the history of Indian cinema where a brand would be the catalyst for a sequel. But MERE DAD KI MARUTI is indeed going to be a live example of how a well-established brand, when used imaginatively as a part of the content of the film can create a win-win situation for everyone associated with movie making. Goes without saying, it is YRF banner that has again taken the lead in creating this novel model of film making.

In these troubled times, when scoring hit at the box office is becoming a difficult proposition, the experimentation that was undertaken through MERE DAD KI MARUTI indeed can be used as a successful case study in financing and ensuring that the film is a hit. Here is the learning for the filmmakers who may like to go in for such kind of financial arrangement to ensure that their investments are secured and they can continue to dream of making money:

Use a generic brand as a part of the narrative, as it was done in MERE DAD KI MARUTI- Use of Maruti which is symptomatic of inspirations and hope of middle class India from the time Maruti debuted in 1982

Generic brand has a pan India publicity network so leveraging on the network, without spending too much on the publicity, the buzz about the film can be created all over the country, as it happened with MDKM where Maruti dealership network was put into action to publicize the film.

When a generic brand is used in a film, the brand owner pays to the producer for using the brand and it covers more than fifty percent of the film making cost, e.g. MDKM costed Rs. 10 crore, of which Rs. 6 crore was paid by Maruti to YRF films.

It would be more so beneficial if a new product from the generic brand is used in the content and it indeed creates the buzz about the product which no other campaign can do. In MDKM, Ertiga the new product of Maruti was used and it was the biggest SUV seller last year. Pertinent to make it a point that Maruti last year had pumped in more than 350 crore to push Ertiga, but one brand positioning with investment of 6 crore made it fastest selling car which a campaign of investment worth 350 crore could not do.

A story that is built around an automobile which has a sense of identity as a generic brand could be a safe bet or the brand could be aspirational. India is the only country right now where brands from world over are coming over to make their presence felt, and for new breed of directors and filmmakers it provides an excellent opportunity to carve their niche in cinema, Ashish Patil, Business and Creative Head of YRF Films would vouch for it.

Yes, when a film is being planned around a generic brand, it should not have stars but actors, so that the brand is not overpowered by the star power.

MERE DAD KI MARUTI has changed the paradigms of filmmaking where advertiser is funding cinema, and for a filmmaker there would not be a much better platform to make films than advertiser coming forward to support it, as it is neat money and clean money.

MDKM at 4th position in 2013 Bollywood's 10 best films so far

2013 Mid-year report card: Bollywood's 10 best films so far

Small budget film 'Mere Dad Ki Maruti' turned out to be a surprise hit. With a promising and rib-tickling storyline, the story revolves a son who loses a car that is a gift for his sister's wedding. With some good performances from Saqib Saleem and Ram Kapoor, the film makes it to our list of best films

Small budget movies turning big moneyspinners

Half the year is gone already but Bollywood is not complaining, for, almost all movies released this year have turned out to be hits. The improving collections at box offices across the country have made the much hyped '100 crore club' a passe.

But what has captured the attention of the trade pundits is the performance of smaller movies, which are also raking in the moolah in multiples.

The slew of smaller films like Fukrey, Aashiqui 2, Commando, Mere Dad Ki Maruti, ABCD with newcomers went on to become box-office winners so far, this year.

Though all of them had new faces and tight budgets, these films still managed to become sleeper hits on the back of good scripts and some great acting by the actors. Consequently, all the newcomers like Aditya Roy Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Salman Yousuff Khan, Dharmesh and others have been suddenly propelled in the big league.

"When audiences like a film, it becomes not just a money-spinner, but also a goodwill earner for everyone connected. It's the audience that ultimately determines the size of the film, not producers and distributors," asserts Ritesh Sidhwani, co-producer of Fukrey, a story of four Delhi boys chasing their wild ambitions.

Interestingly, a film like Aashiqui 2, which featured new actors like its predecessor and helmed by Mohit Suri, managed to make a whopping 82 crore on the basis some some good music, acting and script. "It's a welcome sign that smaller films are also finding takers. Our industry is still star-oriented, but such instances go on to prove that quality content will also work," says trade expert Taran Adarsh.

However, the year is not over yet and another small budget film, Ship of Theseus, much acclaimed at various film festivals across the globe, is set to release in India. The movie, which marks the directorial debut of Anand Gandhi, has Kiran Rao heading all the marketing efforts and the audience has also evinced great interest in the movie.

Without leaps, shows will shut down in six months: Sumona Chakravarti

If you ever meet Sumona Chakravarti aka Natasha of Sony Entertainment Television’s Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, never ever tell her that her character is bad, for she will get on the defensive forthwith.
When we asked her the same, she replied, “It would be very wrong to call Nutts (character’s nick name) as a negative person. It is so, that initially, she was a grey character, after which she had shades of both black and white. My character has always been very realistic. Having attended college in South Mumbai, I have seen many Natashas around whom I have taken character sketches from. I am very happy with the growth of my role, that from a bratty girl to a married lady. In a way, her journey is just like ordinary people going about life; even I am not the same what I was, say, five years back.”
Here Sumona added that success has not been that easy. “I have no Godfather and hail from a normal middle class family. I have done seven shows namely Kasturi, Kasamh Se and Sun Yaar Chill Maar among others before Bade Achhe, and this Balaji Telefilms show finally changed my life. It is because of this show that I am getting other offers (Comedy Nights with Kapil and Comedy Circus).”
“My biggest pillar of support has been my parents. When I was young, my mom would accompany me to auditions. The toughest part for any actor is the waiting period between two shows; it can be extremely tough. Here, my parents were always there for me. They never pressurised me to do anything and always had trust on me. The only condition that dad put on me was that I should finish my education, which I successfully did. I would advise the same to other youngsters who wish to follow our line,” said the actress categorically.
Looking ahead, Sumona has no problem if Bade Achhe does plan a big fat leap. “Ekta Kapoor (producer) is the queen of the TV industry and knows what she is doing, for she understands what the audiences want,” Sumona quipped.
When asked about her take on leaps she observed, “I have nothing for or against a leap. But let’s face it; they help to take the story forward. Without leaps, shows will shut down in six months flat.”
Three cheers for a superb future, Sumona!!!

Breaking News: Broadcasters-TAM deadlock over with consensus on key issues

Followed by a meeting held last week between AAAI, ISA, IBF and TAM, the deadlock between broadcasters and ratings agency TAM is reliably learnt to be over. According to highly placed sources, the industry bodies have reached an understanding on some important issues paving the way for broadcasters to return to TAM.
According to these sources, an understanding on three major issues of "high importance" helped break the deadlock. Even though a final decision on these issues is yet to be announced formally, it is said that TAM and broadcasters have agreed on them in principal.
First, data will be reported on a monthly basis instead of the current weekly system. The second point on which the industry bodies seemed to have agreed upon is that buying will return to CPT model from CPRP and the data will be measured in 1,000s instead of shares. However, it is not clear whether TAM will continue reporting TSV (time spent per viewer). The third issue pertains to niche channels whose data will not be reported unless they achieve a certain threshold.
Broadcasters had started withdrawing from TAM data three weeks ago. Major broadcasters like Multi Screen Media, Times Television Network, NDTV Group, Star India, TV18, Viacom18, India TV and Sri Adhikari Brothers had written to TAM Media Research that they were suspending their subscription to TAM data. The broadcasters' decision was opposed by AAAI and ISA, and this is said to be the reason why all the industry bodies came together to resolve the deadlock with TAM.
While many broadcasters are already said to be back with TAM, others are yet to withdraw their decision

TV stars and their sweetest dreams-Pihu

Eight hours of work, eight hours of rest and eight hours of sleep- indeed that is what every adult is ideally prescribed to. Most of your favourite TV actors can’t afford the luxury of a beauty sleep spanning over eight hours. They spend most of their waking hours working on the sets and commuting to and fro from work. They can barely catch upon a few hours of sleep in a twenty four hour day.
In real life nightmares seem to outnumber sweet dreams especially in adults. Even when you do a Google search, information on terrifying dreams is vast when compared to details on blissful dreams.
In the classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, the protagonist who is transported to an amazing world of make believe populated by a variety of anthropomorphic creatures, encounters quite a few terrifying experiences as well to finally wake up with a start from her dream when the Queen of Hearts screams to her, “Off with her head!”
In the famous soliloquy in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, some have interpreted it as the speaker Hamlet pondering if death is indeed like an everlasting sleep with a series of dreams; he nevertheless wonders what those dreams may be like. It is implied, what if they are horrendous nightmares after all?
How your day went greatly determines what you will dream at night. As TV stars lead very stressful lives most of them were unable to think of a prominent sweet dream they had had. After some effort, a handful of them shared with us a cute dream of theirs.
Herbalists have recommended various natural remedies like passion flower, Jamaican dogwood and valerian for a peaceful sleep with pleasant dreams. These shouldn’t be taken without consulting a medical specialist or doctor though. Listening to soothing music or doing something relaxing before bedtime is also believed to be conducive to a restful sleep at night, which is likely to give rise to beautiful dreams which will revitalise you.

Santosh Shukla's birthday wish is to marry Sakshi Tanwar!

Most of us want a tangible gift on our birthday. Actor Santosh Shukla who you have last seen on Bigg Boss 6 and previously on Koi Sapno Ke Deep Jalaye, Jai Santoshi Maa, Jai Jai Shiv Shankar and Adaalat, feels that his perfect gift on his birthday today (2 July 2013) would be the woman of his dreams. Despite being an actor, he feels that the perfect soul-mate for him would be a girl who doesn’t wear makeup or contact lenses. “I would like God to gift me on my birthday a girl who is from a poor family and is sweet, simple and honest. She shouldn’t be cunning a bit. She should love and accept me the way I am, instead of trying to change me. She should respect my parents. She should be pretty from within and on the exterior too. If there is a girl like that she may email me,” laughs the good looking actor.

If he could have gifted himself something today, he would have met Sakshi Tanwar to propose her. He expresses his fondness of Sakshi, “I am a die-hard fan of the actress. In fact I want to get married to her. If she turns down my proposal, that would be okay too.”

Though he is yet to avail the gift of his perfect soul-mate or win Sakshi’s hand in marriage, Salman Khan has made this blessed day special by gifting him a delicious cake today. They are in Hyderabad today busy shooting for their upcoming film Mental. Santosh may also go with the cast and crew of this film for a merry get-together after pack up to celebrate this day. His career related birthday wish is to be immersed in work in good projects all year round.

Pondering on his worst birthday, he candidly says that it was five years back, when a relationship he was in, came to an end. “I simply do not wish to think of that birthday. With Mahadev’s blessings I overcame the grief.” He feels that he is celebrating his best birthday today as he is shooting with the superstar Salman Khan, who he admires so much.

If he could have gone on a birthday vacation, he feels the best holiday would be spending some quality family time with his parents in his hometown in Lucknow. He then went on to joke that another holiday option would have been visiting Goa accompanied by his loneliness.

We wish that the actor is lonely no more and finds his life partner soon.

High voltage drama in Bade Acche Laggte Hai!

Balaji Telefilms' popular show Bade Acche Laggte Hai, is undergoing a lot of twist and turns these days. It seems happy times are coming up for Kartik in the upcoming tracks of the show after some dramatic twist and turns.

Our source says, "In the coming episodes of the show, the viewers will get to witness good news about Kartik as the doctor will inform the family that he has signs of getting well very soon. The doctor has asked Jhanvi to interact more with Kartik as he shows good response with her interaction and touch. According to the doctor, it's Jhanvi's presence only which will take Kartik out of the coma state. On the other hand, the little baby Chotu goes missing and Natasha (Sumona Chakravarti) and Jhanvi (Sonal Parihar) doubt each other and blame each other on the same."

Our source further adds, "Priya (Saakshi Tanwar) and Soumya (Amrin Chakkiwala) are trying to make Rishabh realize about his future."

When contacted Sonal, she said, "There are so many mysteries to reveal right from Sharma house to Kapoor's mansion. We get so many mails saying why this is happening with the families. So, I would like to say to all of them that ups and downs are part of every family and the Sharma and the Kapoor family are experiencing a tough phase these days. Bade Acche Laggte Hai will soon be back with its happy family track."

The upcoming tracks of the show is yet to unfold a lot of twist and turns about the whereabouts of Chotu who is written in the destiny for Kartik.

Ram & I share a healthy rapport: Sakshi Tanwar

Sakshi Tanwar talks about living, loving and surviving in Tellywood.

You played Parvati (Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii) for seven long years. Was it difficult to get the audience to accept you in your current show?
When I decided to play Priya ( Bade Achhe Lagte Hai) I knew the character had lots of shades. From a young financially independent woman who's a breadwinner to a single mom and then a woman in love, I think the role has interesting graphs. Having said that, I didn't expect it to become so popular. If Parvati was India's favourite bahu, then Priya is the epitome of the urban Indian working woman. A lot of viewers have been able to identify with both of my characters.

Most of your viewers continue to address you as Parvati or Priya. Does that sit comfortably with you?
Actually, a lot of my viewers also recognise me as Sakshi Tanwar, although I have played two iconic characters that have made me a household name. I love it when people call me 'Priya' or 'Parvati', after all they are my alter-egos!

We've heard that you and your co-actor Ram Kapoor don't get along well. What's your off screen rapport with Ram like?
What rubbish! Ram and I are professionals and are completely at ease on screen. Off screen we have a healthy respect for each other.

Most TV actresses have done reality shows. Will we ever get to see you in one soon?
I'm not sure about doing reality TV at this point of my life, but I've enjoyed appearing on the four seasons of Kaun Banega Crorepati.

You've wrapped up Mohalla Assi with Sunny Deol. I enjoyed working in CP Dwivedi's film where I play the role of a simple woman who is married to a pandit (played by Sunny Deol). Working with Sunny was a fabulous experience.

No one seems to know much about your love life. Any plans to settle down sometime soon? Even I'd like to know about my love life. Seriously, right now, work's my priority and I am not thinking about anything else!

In Big B's Shoes

TOI: Raining romance for B-town hotties-Ram

B-Town hotties are taking the heat-o-meter a couple of notches higher - not only with theirBollywood outings, but also in their sizzling ad appearances.

Currently, top brands are capitalising on the screen appeal of teen heartthrobs Imran Khan —Anushka Sharma (as they fight for the last sip of cold coffee), Parineeti Chopra — Varun Dhawan(who promise to keep in touch via a new messaging device), Amit Sadh-Aditi Rao Hydari (in a bejewelled moment), Sidharth Malhotra —Yami Gautam (slurping ice-cream) along with some unusual pairings, like Salman Khan and TV star Aamna Shariff(as they bond over shared household chores), Ram Kapoor and Vidya Malvade (in a hair colour ad) and Dia Mirza and Indraneil Sengupta in eyegrabbing TVCs to cater to urban Indian consumers.

The industry feels, the ads are just an extension of the screen images of the stars which help drive the storyboard. The BO success of romantic films like Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani seems to have set the stage for more mush in ads. Brand consultant Anand Halve says, "If top brands set the trend of using romance as a key category to sell their products, then others tend to follow suit."

Screen image of actors also helps brands pick the chosen ones, feel many. "Relationships are already established on screen — both in movies and serials," says Sanjay Chakraborty, AVP — brand services of an ad agency, and adds, "That people are aware of the chemistry on screen helps brands to make the story in an ad relatable. The story in the ads, however has to strike a chord with the consumer."

Ad film director and filmmaker Ashish Kakkad sounds a note of caution, "If the ad focuses too much on the chemistry of the stars then they might overshadow the product."

Love's ruling the TVCs because it is a tried and tested formula, feel some. "Mother's love for her children and romance will be a favourite subject in ads. When all else fails, you can go back to these formulae to grab attention," says Halve.

I don't see myself committed anytime soon: Sumona

Actor Sumona Chakravarti shares her journey from Lucknow to tinsel town and her hopes to be back here one day
Life has been generously smiling upon Sumona Chakravarti. The young actor, who hails from Lucknow, has now firmly cemented her place in the industry. Best known for her role as Natasha in Bade Acche Lagte Hain, Sumona has managed a successful transition to comedy and her pairing with Kapil Sharma in her latest show on TV has had everyone in splits.

Sumona spent her early childhood in Lucknow. "We used to live on Jopling Road. I attended pre-school at Red Hill and then studied at Loreto Convent till class four. My dad then got a job in Mumbai and we shifted. But I have regularly been coming to Lucknow. My relatives stay in Charbagh and I have a lot of friends in the city." Acknowledging her fondness for the city, she tells us, "I wish that retirement ke baad Lucknow aa jaun- bada sa ghar ho, swimming pool ho," she chuckles

The comic element
Besides Bade Acche Lagte Hain, Sumona has been a regular face in stand-up comedy shows too. And now she's going to star in a pivotal role in Comedy Nights With Kapil alongside Kapil Sharma. Was it difficult managing such a transition? "Comedy was something I never knew I had a flair for. When I got paired with Kapil for Comedy Circus for the first time a year back, my first reaction was, 'Dude, that's fun!' I went with a puppy face and told Kapil ki dekho bhai, main pehli baar kar rahi hoon, please help me out. At times when BALH gets stressful, comedy acts like a stress buster for me. In comedy shows, humein masti karne ke paise milte hain," she chuckles.

The Barfi experience
Sumona recently made her Bollywood debut with Anurag Basu's Barfi. "I have known dada ( Anurag Basu) since a long time. So, when he offered me the role, I just couldn't say no. I did the film simply for him. I knew the length of my role would be small but I wanted to work with 'Anurag Basu'." Elaborating on her experience, she says, "Barfi was like a crash course in film school. I used to spend a lot of time with dada behind the monitor and Ravi Varman sir (the cinematographer of the film). We would just shoot one scene in six hours. TV is all about quantity, films are about quality. The director has everything in his head. On my first day on the set, I was told that there was no script. Initially I thought ki dada ne kahaan phasa diya, but then I realized that that is how the film industry functions. Barfi was the height of being natural. Ileana D'cruz and I would watch Ranbir Kapoor perform and our reactions were absolutely real. I loved the overall experience. It was like a paid holiday for me." Sumona is all praises for her Barfi co-star, Ranbir Kapoor. "I was in awe of Ranbir's work but I was not star-struck by him. I think that was something he really liked and we used to have normal conversations, saath mein baith ke chai peete the," she says.

Some solid stuff
After getting a taste of the silver screen courtesy Barfi, unlike other TV actors, Sumona hasn't really planned a full-fledged move to filmdom. "Nowadays, cinema is changing so much. There is so much of mixed and global cinema happening. Look at Richa Chadda and Huma Qureshi- they are not your typical Bollywood-looking heroines. But they are doing a lot of good work. I'm not focussed ki mere ko Yash Raj heroine type debut launch chahiye. I'm okay with doing hard core, meaty roles like Parineeti Chopra or Konkona Sen Sharma. I'm very greedy for such roles. Bhale five minutes ho, lekin solid ho," she says.

Romancing the lens
Having received no formal training in acting, Sumona has learnt the dynamics of the profession on the job. "During school and college, I always used to be on stage participating in dramatics or any other activity. I have never been to an acting school in my entire life. I am not the sort of a person who can sit in a classroom and learn - be it an acting school or a regular school. I learnt facing the camera, things like focus, stuff about direction, everything on the job," she says. Now that she is picking up the nitty-gritties of a behind-the-scenes job, do we see her in that avatar? "I really don't know. I love romancing the lens. Probably after a body of work of 20 years, I might think about it. It is a huge responsibility. You are responsible for a whole lot of other stuff besides yourself. Right now, I'm just happy being responsible about myself," she chuckles.

A friendly call
Talk about relationships and she takes a hearty laugh. "I haven't been in a relationship since past five years. My friends are just so protective about me. Na date pe jaane dete hain, na khud kuch karte hain. But I'm okay being this way. I know that if I love fall in love, I'm headlong into it. So, I'd rather not. I want to work, I don't see myself committed anytime soon," she shares

Girl power on small screen

While audiences love popular actors and established stars, there’s a whole new generation of actors on TV that’s wooing everyone. Most newcomers disappear after their first shows; there are very few fresh faces that make quite an impact early in their careers. Move over Sakshi Tanwar, Smriti
Irani, Mona Singh, Shweta Tiwari; Surbhi Jyoti, Roopal Tyagi, Sonarika Bhadoria and Deepika Singh are here to stay.

Deepika Singh
Starring in one of the top-rated shows on TV, Diya Aur Baati Hum, is a huge deal and Deepika Singh doesn’t take her job lightly. The 23-year-old enjoys playing the role of the dutiful bahu Sandhya who knows her values and traditions and yet is aware of her rights and chases her dreams. Deepika’s conventional beauty works best for the role of a daughter-in-law in an orthodox family.

In real life, she is very unlike her character on screen — vivacious and tomboyish unlike the serious Sandhya. Having struggled hard to reach this pinnacle, Deepika is enjoying the fruits of her labour.

Roopal Tyagi
Seen in bit roles, Roopal hit the jackpot with Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke. The role of Gunjan seems to be tailor made for her. Roopal’s effortless acting skill is her biggest USP. A choreographer by profession, Roopal landed this lead role by chance. From kissing on screen to adhering to the modern outfits in the show, this 23-year-old sure has a lot going for her. We only hope now that Gunjan is married, the story doesn’t tailspin into a clich├ęd saas-bahu track.
Surbhi Jyoti
Surbhi Jyoti has made a mark with her effervescent character Zoya Ahmed Farooqui in Qubool Hai. Unlike other women on TV, Zoya isn’t cast from the same mould. She comes across as a refreshing change from the whimpering, desolate women on soaps. Surbhi essays the contemporary Muslim girl with aplomb even as she straddles the fence between tradition and modernity with panache. while maintaining innocence. Zoya’s often confused state of mind about matters of the heart, makes her someone girls can relate to.

The 23-year-old Punjabi girl loves the fact that her hit show is unlike other serials on TV.
Sonarika Bhadoria
Mischievous, talkative and outgoing, Sonarika had apprehensions initially about playing a role as grand as Parvati in Devon Ke Dev Mahadev. Yet Sonarika has got into the skin of her character very well. Her beauty works best for the role of a Goddess. Learning her dialogues in pure Hindi is her only Achilles’ heel but the popularity of the show and the variation in her character keep her going strong.

Surprisingly, she had started her career with a dud show, Tum Dena Saath Mera, and at one point, even planned to quit television altogether.

Pavitra Rishta too will take a 20 year leap along with Bade Acche...

As reported earlier Balaji Telefilms Bade Achhe Laggte Hai on Sony TV is already set to take a leap in August and now we hear that Pavitra Rishta too is heading for a 20 years leap by August 2013.
Our source informs us, "The 20 years leap for Pavitra Rishta is on the cards and the reason for the actors quitting the show is that they don't wish to age. The show makers will start shooting for the leap within a month and it's said that Shakti Arora who plays Dr Onir will most likely leave the show! The same goes for Arjun (Rithvik Dhanjani), Purvi (Asha Negi) and Ovi (Shruti Kanwar) who will no more be part of the show. Even Pooni (Jai Mustafa) will no longer be part of the show as she has put down her papers."
The source explains, "The ones who will continue with the show are Archana (Ankita Lokhande), Manav (Hiten Tejwani),and Teju Mrinalini Tyagi . The story will show the kid Pari growing up, while Teju will have a new character opposite her and Archana and Manav will become grandparents. Rest all will be a completely new cast."
The source also said that in case the actors are not convinced the show will have to be puled off air. However, the actors are in a confused state of mind as they are not aware as to what will happen with their respective characters.
We asked Mrinalini Tyagi and she said, "I cant comment now. I too have heard about the leap but I will continue to be a part of the show."
While Jia Mustafa was of the opinion, "I don't want to comment anything as of now."
Lastly, Shakti Arora said, "I have no clue about the leap, nor my track in the show. Till I know anything concrete I won't comment."
Let's all keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Will nt mind agin:Komolika

Sonal Parihar who is presently seen essaying the role of Jhanvi in Sony Entertainment Television’s Bade Achhe Lagte Hain (Balaji Telefilms) is an MBA for whom acting happened by accident. Also, the girl feels she is destined to get into the wide-spread wings of Balaji Telefilms to begin her acting career on television.

Talking about her entry into television, Sonal states, “I had never ever planned to be an actor, even though I am very attached to dance and music. It so happened that I was with a friend and that is when I was spotted and was offered the role of a nice character in an Urdu show. Raju Kherji was the protagonist in the show, and I played his daughter-in-law who had negative shades. This was when I got a liking to acting and decided to get further training in Anupam Kher’s Academy. After that, I did a series of episodics for Mahima Shani Dev Ki, Fear Files, Valentine’s Special for Savdhan India. I later auditioned to replace Chahat Khanna in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, and then went on to give a look test for Pavitra Rishta. However, destiny had other plans and I got selected to play Jhanvi, the other girl in Karthik’s life in Balaji’s Bade Achhe. My stars indicated to me even before I got the role of Jhanvi that my acting skills are going to be nurtured by Balaji Telefilms.”

She goes on to say, “Balaji Telefilms is a great production house to work with for any newcomer. They have a mix of experienced as well as freshers in their setup and they very well know how to welcome a newcomer into the industry. And what more do I want? I have the best of experience in terms of acting in my set in Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar. I never knew how I became a part of the Bade Achhe family and started to gel with all. Today, if I am not shooting for more than a day, I feel something is amiss without meeting my extended family.”

On the dynamics of her character Jhanvi in Bade Achhe, the girl avers, “Jhanvi is positive as she was completely unaware of Karthik (Chirag Thakkar) being married to Natasha (Sumona Chakravarti). After realizing the truth, she has been strong enough and does not want Karthik as her soul mate. I would say Jhanvi’s character has shades of Priya (Sakshi Tanwar) in the sense that she will always stands for the right, and can go even against her husband. The same is with Priya, as she will never worry about relationships and stick to the right. Jhanvi does not want to disturb anyone’s life, as she has seen the happiness that prevails in Priya’s family. The only thing that she craves for is a good future for her baby.”

On the reactions she has been receiving from loyal fans of the show, Sonal explains, “I have been getting mixed reactions. Youngsters love the Jodi of Natasha and Karthik, and they are angry with Karthik for having Jhanvi in his life. Thankfully, no fingers have been raised at me as Jhanvi was completely unaware of the facts. When I am with my relatives, they actually sympathize Jhanvi and wonder why she left her kid with Karthik. They advise me to forget Karthik and move on with the baby (smiles). I am happy with the positive response in totality.”

Ask her whether Jhanvi in due course of time will turn negative, and she states, “I don’t know whether this is on the cards. Ekta M’am (Kapoor) has been working continuously on the creative aspects of the show. We are actually waiting to see how the story will progress now.”

Bade Achhe Lagte Hain is due for yet another generation leap sometime in August this year. And we did ask Sonal if she is willing to age in the show. “To tell you honestly, Ekta M’am is not even thinking of the leap now. She wants the story line to hit an all time high before we take the leap. We are set for a 360 degree turn in the story line of Bade Achhe.”

And on her reactions to the proposed 20 year leap in the show, the actress justifies, “We are still waiting to know whether the show takes a 20 year leap or something less. I feel the show belongs to Ram and Sakshi and their love story. If a leap of 20 years is shown, I don’t think there will be much to show about their romance. And viewers will not accept the romance of the next generation.”

Lastly, Sonal did clarify that she will not mind ageing in Bade Achhe if her character has something extra special to do. “If I have a strong track, and get a role as huge as that of Komolika, I will not mind playing an older character,” quips the actress before bidding adieu.

Sonal, we wish you all the very best for the next phase in Bade Achhe...

Karthik nt to die??

Balaji Telefilms Bade Acche Lagte Hain on Sony TV just witnessed Natasha pointing a gun on Kartik (Chirag Thakkar) while Kartik has been rushed to the hospital and is breathing his last.
Our source informs us, "Soon doctors will give up and say that Kartik is breathing his last but then there will be some improvement in his health. Finally he will not die in the show and will be in ICU and the family will wait for Kartik to rejoice."
"After which Ram (Ram Kapoor) and Priya (Saakshi Tanwar) will re- unite and call off their wedding and also make sure that things sort out between Kartik and Natasha while the whole family is praying for Kartik's well being"
When contacted Chirag Thakkar he said, "I don't know whether Kartik will die or not... it's a creative's call. As of now he will be shown to be in ICU. Whether he will be back home or breathe his last is a question which I can't answer."
This particular sequence will go on air in the coming week.

What's his body type?

Here's how a recent survey describes the physique of your favourite male celeb.
It’s not only women who fuss over their weight, men too are equally concerned about their body shape, and taking this into account researchers have identified seven body types among males. Professor Brendan Gough, a psychologist at Leeds Metropolitan University, said modern men care much more about their appearance than previous generations. “We live in a world where appearance is very important for guys — in work, relationships and well-being,” he added.

“Few live up to the models on magazine covers, but more are moisturising, tanning and even wearing make-up. When men look good, they feel good.” The survey found that men felt at their physical best aged 28. But, as they aged, they lost confidence and some even suffered depression about the way they looked. Many felt pressure from magazines to look good but most admitted poor diets and lack of exercise stopped them having a better body.

They are a little bit larger around the middle. These men are fit but they don’t possess washboard abs.

The actors: Sunny Deol, Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt

Straight up and down with no extra weight. This shape is more sporty, not particularly ribbed and muscular.

The actors: Imran Khan and Akshay Kumar

Slightly chubby all over. A little on the heavier side. Could do with some diet and exercise.

The actors: Govinda

Broad all over. Strong. Alpha male. Pumps iron. Heavy weights and tailormade to play the part of Hulk.

The actors: Salman Khan and John Abraham

Broad shoulders and slim waistline. A very worked out body. This type of male spends a lot of time in the gym. Watches what he eats and is very disciplined.

The actors
: Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Vidyut Jamwal and Ranveer Singh.

String Bean
Very skinny and lean. Usually blessed with this type of body. Minimum upkeep needed.

The actors: Ranbir Kapoor, Siddharth Malhotra and Arjun Rampal

Rounded around the stomach and chest creating a figure of eight-like shape.

The actors: Ram Kapoor, Ram Kapoor and Ram Kapoor.

What women want?
The triangular ‘nacho’, with the broad shoulders and slim waist is most popular with women.

Men want?
The most coveted shape was a ‘cucumber’ because of the lean figure

Bade Acche Lagte Hain: Karthik Sharma is dead; Priya Kapoor in hospital!

Bade Acche Lagte Hain: Karthik Sharma is dead; Priya Kapoor in hospital!

Our man Karthik was shot by the cops and died in the hospital while saving his sister Priya. But wait….why is Natasha Kapoor wailing?

It all came to head last night on the Hindi soap Bade Acche Lagte Hain. Ram Kapoor, his little sister Natasha Kapoor and brother Rishab have mustered up a posse of policemen to nab Karthik Sharma, who is back in town and promising to meet his sister Priya Kapoor. Somewhere in the proceedings, Karthik – who has some explaining to do apropos his two wives, Jhanvi and Natasha, and one son – finds out that the cops are hot on his trail and starts running. His pregnant sister Priya runs after him, but collapses in pain in the middle of the street; typically, the passers-by keep passing by and pay little attention to the fallen woman. Karthik grabs his infant son and runs to the car where Ayesha – yes, the villain of this little piece – is waiting to help him make a getaway…or does she have something more slimy and nasty in mind? Aha, so he chooses to flee instead of remembering family loyalty, right? We thought that too, really!
But no, Karthik puts the child in the car and runs back to pick Priya up, bringing her to the passenger side and settling her in, the baby on her lap. He pulls Ayesha out and starts getting in to drive. And hey, the cops finally arrive! With the expected competency of onscreen policemen, one of them shoots Karthik in the shoulder and then proceeds to lose the trail as our man drives off, making a real mess of the car with his blood. In the hospital, he insists Priya is taken care of, the baby is looked after and his familial bond is the redeeming factor to his image, before he collapses in a welter of what looks suspiciously like ketchup and dies. At least, we think he is dead – a whole bunch of people stands around looking ineffective while Natasha throws herself on her (late?) husband’s chest and wails. Ram stands in the crowd looking as open-mouthedly bewildered as ever. The promos for today show the whole family turning up at the hospital and bawling….another half hour of fun is in store for us, we know!
So what happens next? We cannot wait to find out…..

Bade Acche Lagte Hain: Is Natasha trying to break up Ram Kapoor and Priya Kapoor’s marriage?

Bade Acche Lagte Hain: Is Natasha trying to break up Ram Kapoor and Priya Kapoor’s marriage?

Will the rock-solid love story manage to withstand the latest storm, or will things go sour soon? We have reasons to wonder….

So it has all hit the fan. Kartik Sharma, Priya Kapoor’s brother, finally revealed that he had been setting up house with Jhanvi, cheating on wife Natasha Kapoor, and had a baby with his new lady too. As a result, he left the Sharma house, leaving the baby behind, after Jhanvi had left the child with him. Confused? Wait – it gets more interesting and convoluted. Natasha takes off on a bender and spends the next couple of days drunk, ending up in hospital. And the snake in the Kapoor world turns up there to have a chat. Yes, Ayesha drops in to see Natasha and pours poison into her ear. And the gal, who has been so painfully and boringly goody goody, playing dutiful and loving bahu for too long, suddenly turns – she now refuses to have anything to do with her in-laws as long as Kartik’s baby is in the house and actually storms out of the house with it to abandon it somewhere.
So now it gets exciting. The Sharmas, Sudhir and Shipra, Priya’s parents, run after Natasha and grab the baby. In the temper tantrum struggle, she falls and hits her head. And you just know what comes next – Natasha brings in the police, saying that her in-laws had to be arrested for daughter-in-law bashing. The Sharma couple are thrown in jail – and there is a really mean and nasty cop-woman who keeps yelling for some reason – and lots of tears are shed. Priya and Ram come charging in to the rescue and more weeping and wailing ensues. Turns out that Natasha will make peace again only if the baby is given away. So Priya takes the infant to Neha and Vikram’s house and leaves it with them. Along the way, Natasha makes threats that she will make sure that Priya and Ram split…or did we hear that wrong?
Whatever is going on in Bade Acche Lagte Hain, at least it is much more fun than all the lovey dovey coohie-coo niceness that was happening on the show. We feel much better now

Bade Acche Lagte Hain: Karthik to die in an accident

Bade Acche Lagte Hain: Karthik to die in an accident

It is a coincidence or planned murder?

We like to get into the drama of the whole thing and the recent track of Bade Acche Lagte Hai provides us just enough of that, don’t you agree?
Natasha is doing everything in her power to teach Karthik a lesson for cheating on her. She sent his parents to jail, gave his kid up for adoption and will very soon put him behind bars as well. While Karthik still loves Natasha, he is miffed with her for aborting his child, troubling his parents and being inhuman to an infant.
While the situation is getting worse by minute, Natasha will get a word that Karthik has met with an accident. Sources confirm that Karthik will be killed in this road crash, and his track will end. Wethinks the daily soap would be a tad interesting if it was not an accident, but murder – just imagine the drama then.
BALH has been killing off people in accidents whenever they have wanted to end a character. Eva Grover who played Niharika was killed in the same manner followed by Chahat Khanna who was initially cast as Ayesha and now Chirag Thakkar aka Karthik – isn’t it getting a bit too redundant?
Wethinks the writers should consider making this a murder instead, but who will stoop this low for a revenge? Will it be Natasha – for obvious reasons, or Ayesha – ‘coz we really don’t expect anything much from her. Or will Ram Kapoor be the one to kill Karthik for ruining his li’l sister’s life? You never know, maybe Priya Kapoor could be the one behind it all ‘coz Karthik is the sole reason for all the troubles in her marriage.

Natasha is making a demand to throw Karthik's illegitimate child out of the house but her in-laws are not willing to do so.

Ram is supporting her choti (Natasha) as he feels that Karthik and his family have hurt her a lot.

Avinesh of 'Madhubala' to Rithvik of 'Pavitra Rishta' - The small screen daddies

Mumbai: Saas Bahus gorge on the maximum screen space on small screen than men. Female brigade of daily soaps is a tough competitor for men battalion on small screen.

Some of our male actors of small screen like, Avinesh Reki (Madhubala - Ek Ishq Ek Junoon), Rithvik Dhanjani (Pavitra Rishta), Dheeraj Dhoopar (Sasural Simar Ka), Ram Kapoor, (Bade Achhe Lagte Hai) and Kunal Karan Kapoor (Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuchh Kaha Season-2), Mohit Raina (Devon Ke Dev Mhadev) are happily playing their role of a father whereas some actors like Aditya Redijj, Kushal Tandon Karan Tacker denies to play a father on-screen.

On Father's day, here we are with some of the small screen's daddies.

I have a two year old son, so it wasn't difficult for me to be a dad on screen. Actors who have chocolate boy looks are apprehensive about aging on screen. I have a matured look so my current character suits me. Besides mindsets have changed now, it's a cliche that actors don't want to age on screen."
